Our Journey towards IB
Key Biscayne Presbyterian School is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). This means we are pursuing authorization to join a global community of schools committed to developing curious, caring, and confident lifelong learners.
Being a candidate school reflects our deep commitment to nurturing every child’s potential through inquiry, reflection, and meaningful action—values that have always been at the heart of KBPS.

What Is the IB PYP?
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) serves students ages 3–12 and provides a framework for how children learn best—through exploration, questioning, and discovery.
Rather than focusing only on traditional subjects, the PYP connects learning across transdisciplinary themes, encouraging children to make sense of the world and see themselves as active participants in it.

How Learning Happens
At KBPS, the IB approach complements our belief that children learn best through hands-on experiences and purposeful inquiry. Teachers design learning opportunities that:
-
Encourage students to ask questions and seek answers through research and experimentation
-
Foster critical thinking and problem-solving
-
Build connections between classroom learning and real-world contexts
-
Emphasize collaboration, communication, and reflection
-
This approach nurtures curiosity and helps children become active, compassionate learners who understand that they can make a difference
The IB Learner Profile
At the heart of the IB philosophy is the Learner Profile, a set of attributes that guide students to become:
-
Inquirers
-
Knowledgeable
-
Thinkers
-
Communicators
-
Principled
-
Open-minded
-
Caring
-
Risk-takers
-
Balanced
-
Reflective

At KBPS, these qualities align beautifully with our mission to foster a love of learning, respect for others, and a sense of purpose grounded in faith and community.

Social-emotional learning is deeply embedded in the IB framework. As students inquire, collaborate, and reflect, they also practice empathy, self-management, and responsible decision-making. The IB Learner Profile attributes — such as caring, principled, balanced, and reflective — mirror our commitment to nurturing children who are both confident learners and compassionate neighbors.
Our Commitment
As we move through the IB candidacy process, our teachers are participating in professional development, revising curriculum frameworks, and designing learning experiences that reflect the IB philosophy while staying true to our school’s values and Christian foundation.
Together, we are creating a joyful, globally minded learning environment where every child can grow academically, emotionally, and spiritually
